Optimizing performance with SCADA data

Since 2018, VALEMO has been using SCADA data analysis to improve the performance of the wind farms it monitors. Collected continuously or transmitted by the customer, this data provides a detailed view of machine behavior and enables early detection of anomalies such as faulty wind sensors, temperature drifts, misalignments, cooling problems, and occasional or chronic underperformance.

A structured analysis method


VALEMO’s approach is based on a rigorous five-step process:

Data acquisition: data from wind turbines is provided by the customer or collected continuously.
Processing: only reliable and relevant data is retained.
Analysis: anomalies are identified using specific indicators and AI algorithms.
Diagnosis: a detailed report is drawn up by our experts to characterize the performance of the wind farm.
Personalized support: we help our customers interpret the results and define corrective actions.

This independent analysis enables us to take an objective look at the actual state of the machine, particularly in sensitive phases such as a change of operator or the end of a warranty period. By helping to avoid production losses and unforeseen breakdowns, it contributes directly to asset reliability.

A concrete example: the case of a misaligned wind turbine


One of the many cases discussed illustrates the added value of SCADA analysis. Four wind turbines on the same farm were showing performance discrepancies. The study identified significant underperformance on one of them, particularly at low wind speeds. The hypothesis of misalignment was confirmed by a LiDAR measurement campaign. After readjustment, production increased by over 15%.

Towards multi-energy supervision

While wind power was our first area of application, we also use SCADA data in solar and hydroelectric power. At the Limoux hybrid power plant, which combines photovoltaics and storage, the Technical Engineering department has developed a specific supervision interface. This unique platform manages both solar inverters and batteries, interacts with the aggregator to adapt production to market conditions, and responds to requests from the grid operator.

This integrated supervision is based on the same principles as those applied to wind power: acquisition, control, anticipation and optimization. It demonstrates VALEMO’s ability to develop its tools to support the diversification of generation resources and respond to new challenges in the sector, such as negative prices and curtailment constraints.

Data to inform decisions

By centralizing and exploiting SCADA data, VALEMO enables its customers to improve the overall performance of their facilities, while securing their value on the energy market. Far from being limited to simple monitoring, this approach is part of a consultancy and partnership logic, for faster, more informed and more efficient decision-making.
